Last thursday (18th September 2008), I was at the Ecademy meeting in London where two gentlemen by the names of Richard Newman & Christian Billett came to do a speech on Body Language and Voice coaching, they highlighted the importance of having effective communication skills on both these in order to have a much higher chances in various forms of communication.
The event was very interesting, I am highlighting below some of the key points I remember from the event:
- The Getting from Point A to B is like doing the same in a real life map. We need the following -
- A Vehicle: Analogous to having a means to achieving our goal, whether its Properties, Trading, or Internet Marketing or anything else.
- Fuel: This represents the Driving force that makes us move from one place to another, this is inspiration, stamina and willpower. Without that we are unable to make any progress in any direction.
- Licence: We do need to be in the right age to be able to drive, if that doesnt happen we might need to hop into someone else’s car to get us to our destinations. This is very similar to a real-life situation, especially for those just starting out, you need credibility to make good progress, but where do you get the credibility when you start? Partnerships with people who already built up the credibility will take us a a long way towards this to the point where we are able to drive our vehicle on our own through our own credibliity.
- Directions: Without proper directions either from a map or preferably from someone who is familiar with the terrain and has driven the road before its very difficult to get from A to B, especially when B might be right round the corner and you are going round and round in circles. This emphasizes the need to have a Mentor or at the very least work with someone else who has similar goals as yourself. The speed can be much faster if you are able to move with someone.
- Richard was able to work out 6 people live, whether they were lying or telling the truth by observing their body language only. This was simply amazing, only 2 people in the audience (out of 150) managed to get the same level of accuracy as Richard. I will definitely be wanting to learn more of this.
- Christian showed us how we can make our voice more interesting just by remembering the 5 Ps:
- Pitch: Only use a monotonous pitch to highlight something, otherwise change the pitch along the sentence.
- Pace: Speed up to show passion & Excitement, Slow Down to emphasize important points.
- Pause: after important phrases. The audience will listen more intently and have time to think about what you have just said.
- Projection: Fully engage your listeners, NOT by being loud, but by using more breath and intensity.
- Passion: The key to bringing it all together. If you’re not passionate, your audience wont be either! Express yourself fully.
Overall the Seminar was quite interesting. Although I dont understand why they did not have anyone in the back of the room doing some signups to a further course. I thnk that would have been beneficial to UKBodyTalk, Ecademy AND the audience as many people may have had been interested to take this to the next level but would not usually bother to go to the site and fill in the contact form to find out if they have any further courses.
Before and after the seminar there was also a lot of networking opportunity. I was able to meet some very interesting people, and I may even work with some of them longer term in the future.
